The smallest SIE section at 9% (7 questions): how people are registered, what continuing education requires, who is disqualified, and what employees must disclose to their firm.

Key concepts

Registration. Form U4 registers an associated person and must be kept current (for example, within 30 days of most reportable events). Form U5 is filed when the person leaves the firm.

Continuing education. Registered persons complete the annual Regulatory Element and their firm’s Firm Element training. The Maintaining Qualifications Program lets eligible people who leave keep their qualifications for up to five years.

Disqualification. Certain felonies, some misdemeanors and regulatory sanctions trigger statutory disqualification, which bars association with a member firm unless FINRA approves an exception.

Outside activities. Outside business activities require prior written notice to the firm. Private securities transactions (“selling away”) require written notice and, if compensated, firm approval and supervision.

Worked example

Qualification validity

A candidate passes the SIE in March 2025 and is hired and registered on the Series 7 in May 2026. The SIE result was still valid (four years from passing). If that rep leaves the industry in 2027, the Series 7 qualification lapses two years after termination unless the rep enrolls in the MQP, which can extend it to five years.

Common traps

  • Passing the SIE does not register you with FINRA; only a top-off exam plus a Form U4 filing by a member firm does.
  • Unpaid outside activities still require notice to the firm.
