Series 65 vs 66: Which One Do You Need?

Take the Series 65 if you will only give fee-based advice and do not have (or want) the Series 7. Take the Series 66 if you hold the Series 7 and want to be both a broker agent and an investment adviser representative; it replaces the 63 and 65 in one exam.

What each one lets you do

The Series 65 qualifies you as an investment adviser representative (IAR). The Series 66 qualifies you as if you passed both the Series 63 (state agent) and the Series 65 (IAR), but NASAA requires a valid SIE and Series 7 when you register with it. Content is similar; the 66 drops most economics and product detail (assumed from the Series 7) and puts 45% of its weight on law and ethics, vs 30% on the 65.
